The Cyber Highway: Policies, Procedures & Ethics > Presented by Kathryn A. Bernert.
Employers want to use social media information when making hiring and termination decisions, and to monitor employees. Employees want to be connected 24 hours a day. Ms. Bernert will discuss the legal and practical issues facing employers as a result of the explosion of social media used by employees. Topics will include the rights and limitations when addressing work-related social media postings, employer duties when employees are texting or posting inappropriate, harassing or threatening remarks about other employees, the potential litigation impact of social media and texting in the workplace, and the rights of employers and employees when confidential information is disseminated.
Handling Tough Medical Issues in the Workplace > Presented by Phillip L. Kossy.
In this provocative presentation, Mr. Kossy will provide an overview of the key laws that govern the handling of medical issues in the workplace. Attendees will learn how to navigate through privacy, leave and disability accommodation laws, while responding to medical issues. Mr. Kossy will also offer insights into how to manage long-term medical leaves in light of the overlapping laws covering such leaves.
Hot Topics and Recent Trends in California Wage and Hour Law > Presented by Marie Burke Kenny.
California wage and hour laws continue to provide traps for the unwary employer and create significant resulting liability. During this insightful presentation, Ms. Kenny will reveal some of the critical areas for wage and hour compliance that can protect employers from liability. Topics will include vacation/PTO rules, overtime exemption and independent contractor misclassifications, unlawful wage deductions, uncompensated "off the clock" hours, reporting time pay, expense reimbursement, and recent developments in wage and hour laws.
