In 1873, Moses A. Luce started his law practice and joined the bankers, builders and visionaries who shaped San Diego, California's first city. He drafted the first City Charter. The organizational meeting for the San Diego Public Library was held in his office. Moses rode the economic boom of the 1870s, first as an attorney and then as Vice-President for Santa Fe Railroad, to become Postmaster and County Judge. Born in Illinois, he served in the military during the Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He practiced law as one of the county's leading citizens for nearly 50 years until 1922, when he retired at 80. He died at 91.
Edgar A. Luce, Sr. was the youngest son and the sixth offspring of Moses Luce. He graduated from Stanford University in 1905 and, without ever having taken a law course, passed the state bar exam that same year. His father promptly made him a partner in the law firm, where he practiced prior to his active political career as Deputy City Attorney, State Senator, and Judge of the Superior Court for San Diego, which lasted until 1925. His son, Edgar A. Luce, Jr., continued the tradition of excellence and commitment to our clients.
F. Tudor Scripps joined the firm partnership as a Stanford graduate in 1934 and continued the relationship for almost 30 years. He worked principally in the La Jolla office, which opened in 1939, where he practiced probate law. Mr. Scripps was related to the local prominent and philanthropic family that contributed so much to the still-developing San Diego. He passed away in 1963.
Edgar A. Luce, Jr. graduated from Stanford in 1948. He joined the firm the same year, became a partner in 1955 and the managing partner from 1978-83. He received numerous awards and served in various civic and professional organizations, including having been a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and an Arbitrator for the San Diego Superior Court, the American Arbitration Association and the New York Stock Exchange. Mr. Luce passed away in 2006.
Thomas M. Hamilton joined the firm in 1959 after practicing law in another firm and as in-house counsel for Cohu Electronics. Shortly thereafter, he became the managing partner. His specialty was business and probate law. Kansas born, he was a Stanford law graduate by the age of 21 and admitted to the California Bar in 1937. He is retired and now resides in Santa Barbara.
In 1994, the firm acquired its offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, which today both serve clients in business litigation, insurance litigation, environmental law, real estate and tax law.
In 2001, the firm opened its Carmel Valley / Del Mar office, expanding its service to technology and media clients.
In 2006, the firm opened its Rancho Santa Fe office, further expanding its trusts and estates practice.
In 2007, the firm opened its Orange County office, further expanding its practices in real estate, real estate litigation, and eminent domain and condemnation. Opening an office in this key location has strengthened the firm's presence from the California coast to the Inland Empire.
Today, with over 200 attorneys, Luce Forward continues its commitment to excellence in serving clients and communities.
